Convict Times
Students will return to the convict era through dress up and role-play as characters from the Island’s colourful past. Whilst exploring the stunning site of Cockatoo Island students will gain understanding into the impact of the First Fleet, the ramifications for the Indigenous population and the rapid changes and developments between 1788 and 1869 when the first penal establishment on Cockatoo Island closed.
This interactive tour will activate children’s imaginations, encouraging them to engage with and interpret the Island’s stories. The Convict Times tour focuses on skills of historical enquiry and will support children in recognising the difference and importance of physical evidence and primary and secondary sources.
Warning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders: This tour contains stories and may contain images and/or visuals of deceased people.
