Learning experiences

Cockatoo Island is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site with an importance place in Australia's maritime and defence history. This is evidenced by more than 80 colonial and industrial assets, including artefacts, across the site. For Sydney's Aboriginal people, Cockatoo island was known as 'Wareamah', believed to mean 'woman land'.

Our education programs explore this vast history, and are designed to meet the requirements of several key syllabus areas of the NSW Curriculum. They have been developed to foster enquiry-based learning and to provide a fun and interactive learning experience for students. Comprehensive learning materials are available pre and post-visit.
