As the old saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Looking at this abstract image, what do you see and feel? Does it spark a sense of wonder, do you find it eerie? Is it a topographical map of a snow-blasted mountainscape? No! It’s a concrete wall within the underground tunnels of North Fort at North Head Sanctuary.
The colours and textures are the result of efflorescence, which is a process of water seeping through masonry to produce salt deposits and discoloration. In this case, efflorescence is the result of natural water coursing through the 200-metre-long tunnel complex. Think you have what it takes to solve this puzzle?
